Memorial Park nature trail
A new nature trail has been created in Memorial Park by the PROSPECTS Foundation. There are 10 wooden posts located around the park and each post features a different plant, animal or fungi that can be seen in Memorial Park. Each post has a rubbing disc, where you can use a piece of paper and a crayon to make a rubbing of the species featured on the wooden post. Very soon each post will have a unique QR code which can be scanned with a smartphone., Each QR code links to a special page on this website where you can learn more about the 10 different plants, animals and fungi. Can you find all 10 posts?
The Round Wood
The park has its own woodland for you to explore.
It is a haven for wildlife, plants and fungi.
It is protected and now the home of our new forest school.
History of the Roundwood
The Round Wood forms the northernmost part of Memorial Park. It is thought the name Round Wood most likely originated from the fact that when viewed from above the total woodland is cicular in shape. In fact the wood is divided into two halves with one half remaining in private ownership.
In August 2005, the Fiends of Memorial Park commissioned an ecological survey of the section of the Round Wood under the ownership of Hyndburn Borough Council. The survey and resulting report was compiled by Mr John Lanb M.Sc, Conservation officer for East Lancashire Wildlife Trust. The survey included Birds, bryophytes and macro fungi. The cost of the survey was £1,506.35. Following publication of the report the Round Wood was designated a Biological Heritage Site.
A second survey was undertaken 2024. Copies of the surveys can be requested from Frioends of Memorial Pak via this web site.
Winter 2024 - Rhododendron and Cherry Laurel clearing sessions
As some of you may have noticed, work is underway to clear the Rhododendron and Cherry Laurel that has made the park it’s home. Since November, there have been 8 community volunteer sessions organised where budding gardeners have helped us maintain and reduce the spread of both. While we always want to keep the space as green and interesting as possible, if these species are left unchecked, they can become very dominant and have a negative impact on the woodland dynamics and biodiversity of the wider site – so our fantastic volunteers are working hard to keep things in check. We will be learning how to properly sharpen and maintain tools that are commonly used when working within a woodland.
