PENDLE HILL - this is the most prominent part of the vista. With a peak of 557m above sea level it is known locally for its connections to the "Lancashire Witches". Rain laden clouds riding on a westerly wind over the Fylde cost rise sharply on reaching Pendle and ofter deposit their treasures on the east side Lancashire Mill towns famous for their damp, moist climate.
MARTHOLME VIADUCT - Martholme Viaduct crosses the River Calder and was built to carry the North Lancs Loopline or the Padiham Branch which passed through Great Harwood, Simonstone and Padiham re connecting with the East Lancs Line at Rosegrove. It is 65 feet high and has ten arches each with a span of 40 feet. Construction was completed in 1877. The line closed for regular passenger traffic in 1957.
