The Legal Bit In 2016, Hyndburn Borough Council announced it would not be planting any summer or winter bedding plants in the parks or open spaces. There would be no hanging baskets of flower towers as in past years.
The Friends Committee negotiated to retain and look after the 3 parks flower beds with the Parks Manager to prevent them being "grassed over".
In October 2016 the group planted approx. 2000 daffodil bulbs in the beds with the help of 32 volunteers. Spring 2017 saw a wonderful display of colour.
More recently, a small group of volunteers have volunteered to maintain and upgrade the 3 remaining park flower beds. The group have named themselves as the "Memorial Park Weeders", They Communicate with each other by a "Whats App" group on plans they may have.
21st March 2024 - The "Weeders" have been in action again today spreading "black Gold" soil conditioner kindly provided by the Council's Parks Dept. It was disappointing whilst working on the flower beds to find a large deposit of dog fecies amonst broken daffodils which was removed by our volunteers before starting work.
In addition to the 3 round flower beds the enthusiastic group have undertaken to restore the original "Sensory Garden" started by FoMP members back in 2005.
11th May 2025.- Sadly our team of "weeders" have become dispondant. They spend hours weeding, tending and adding new plants to the flower beds. Unfortunately some dog owners reward our team by allowing their dogs to enter the beds, dig up plants and bulbs and foul the soil for good measure. We find this most frustrating and disappointing. Given that dogs have to be on leads on the majority opf the playng filds but are allowed to run free in th park does not help. Some owners stand and chat to other park users or answer their phone which is fine and what parks are about. Regretably during this period of relaxation they seem oblivious that their dogs are causing damage to the park and a nucence to other park users who may not like dogs.
The Council have agreed that we can place some small signs in beds and monitor the reaction - so watch this space!
